Deity Information
» Pantheon: Greek
» Deity: Triton
» Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triton_(mythology), http://www.theoi.com/Pontios/Triton.html
» Divine Family: {mother & father} Poseidon and Amphitrite; {spouse} unknown; {siblings} Benthesikyme, possible full-sister Rhode, many, many half-siblings; {children} Pallas, Kalliste (by Libya), Triteia, the Tritonides. Possibly Scylla by Lamia.

» Mythology: Triton was the only trueborn son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, and thus the presumed heir to his underwater kingdom. According to Hesiod’s Theogony, he lived with his parents in a golden undersea palace, although Poseidon had little hand in raising the boy. Nonetheless, Triton served as Poseidon’s herald, second-in-command and lieutenant of his armies. Although Poseidon called for the attacks, it would be Triton who gave the signal to fall back once he received the order to retreat. Triton’s trumpet-shell also frightened away the enemy giants, and had the power to cause the seas to rise or be calmed, depending on which order was given.

Although Homer lists his seat of power in the waters off Aegae, Triton also had a small realm of his own: the eponymous Lake Tritonis, though he was also said to have some sway off the coast of Libya. When Jason and the Argonauts ran aground in Libya, they carried their vessel to Lake Tritonis. There, they were met by Triton, who treated them as honored guests, offering a guest-gift of a clod of earth, and ultimately guided them from the marshy lake back out to sea.

No woman was ever named as being Triton’s wife, but he did have a handful of daughters. Most famous among these was Pallas, who was often identified with Athena. Some tales go so far as to claim that it was Triton who was responsible in aiding Athena’s birth, but at the very least, he fostered her, rearing Athena alongside Pallas. One day, the two goddesses were fighting, and Pallas was killed in the skirmish, leading Athena to adopt the name Pallas along with hers. At that point, Triton sent her back to Olympus.

» Ability: Triton has the ability to calm storms at will. He can’t get rid of them, but he can reduce a raging thunderstorm to a steady rainfall, slow the wind a few miles per hour and help smooth the waves of a body of water. He can also intensify storms somewhat or cause water to rise, if he chooses, but finds it more difficult than calming it. It won't work if the conditions aren't already in the early stages of a storm. Either way, it only works in his immediate vicinity--trying anything much beyond that will rapidly deplete his energy and drops proportionally in terms of effectiveness. It is worth noting that Triton very rarely will do anything to the weather unless specifically commanded to do so. In a similar but subconscious tactic, he has a tendency to cow the people in the vicinity around him—most nearby mortals tend to shut up and listen when Triton speaks. Other godlings in the area will find him hard to ignore, but generally feel no particular compulsion to do as he says.

» History: Triton's first mortal reincarnation was during the Roman Empire as Servius Marius Oceanus. He was born the son of a well-respected general, and the grandson of a wealthy senator. He proudly followed in his father's military footsteps, and eventually became a general himself under the command of Tiberius Nero. He died at the age of fifty, leaving behind a wife and three daughters.

His second incarnation saw him born again in Italy as Salvatore di Costa in the late eleventh century. He answered the call against the Crusades under Pope Urban II, and was killed in battle at the age of 25.

His third incarnation took place in 1790s France as Corentin Prideaux, where he grew up during a time of great political upheavals. He joined the French army in an attempt to find stability in his life, devoting himself more to his men and his commanders than to any particular head of state, having seen the government change hands and forms no less than four times. He became a Legionnaire by the age of 30. He had a distinguished career for his efforts in the early French colonization of Algeria, and even had the opportunity to meet Abd el-Kader in person, who complimented him for his sense of duty and loyalty. At the age of 45, he was awarded as part of the Legion of Honor, and died at the ripe age of 83.

His fourth incarnation was the first to see him born away from the ocean, as he was reborn as Apostol Zhidkov in 1909 Russia, though it was fitting in its way for a cold-hearted sea prince. Too young to remember much of the rule of the Romanovs, Apostol was a child of the Revolution, spending much of his formative years under the upheaval of the revolution and World War I. His family made many political connections during that time, and he grew to become a government clerk when he was still a very young man. He answered to one Mischa Dyakov, who was, in fact, his father Poseidon, and had been appointed to his position under Stalin's influence, at least up until Mischa was accused of being an internal enemy. Apostol defended Mischa to the best of his ability, producing correspondences and any other proof he could get to show his innocence in the matter, but it was ultimately of no use. Both men were arrested, and Mischa ended up sent to a gulag. As for Apostol, no one was able to prove any wrongdoing on his part, so he was ultimately released. However, Apostol never stopped trying to clear Mischa's name, even after his death prior to World War II. Thus, Apostol never completely escaped from the cloud of suspicion that hung over him since the scandal. During the Cold War, he found himself accused of being a spy (which wasn't true, but they wanted an excuse to get rid of him), and was again arrested. He died in prison in the 1960s.

Most recently, on January 3, 1991, he was reborn in New York City as Boden Murphy, his parents’ only son. His father was a very successful businessman, and his mother also came from a wealthy family, so Boden was born into a privileged upbringing. However, his father soon realized that he had little patience as a family man, but his work could only distract him for so long. So, while Boden was still an infant, his father joined the Marines, completing several tours overseas, and leaving his son to be largely raised by his mother. When his father was involved, it was as a strict and austere disciplinarian who expected complete obedience from his son.

Though he rarely saw his father growing up, young Boden viewed him as a powerful man deserving of respect, and wanted nothing more than to make his father proud of him, so he pushed himself to excel at all levels. He got perfect grades all through school, learned two languages over years of study (made slightly easier by having vague memories of speaking them both in former lives), served as team captain for numerous sports and activities (including the debate team), was president of the student council and his chapter of the National Honor Society, and won several musical contests playing the trumpet. He graduated high school as valedictorian.

Boden is currently attending Princeton University in his third year as a magna cum laude pre-law student majoring in political science. He has dreams of entering the field of politics one day, for once having little interest in serving in the armed forces. He is the leader of both the lightweight crew and water polo teams there, chapter president of his fraternity Chi Phi, and vice-president of the student government.

» Personality: Like his father before him, there is a certain void in Triton. Never having really known a father’s love, his greatest wish is to at least earn his father’s pride. Triton is ambitious, but only to the point of proving himself a worthy heir with no question that he will be the one to carry on the legacy. He doesn’t particularly wish to overthrow anyone, but he refuses to serve as anything less than the second-in-command to those he considers worthy authority figures. Triton rarely sees anyone as an equal--either they are authority figures to be respected, enemies to be battled, or they are inferior to him.

Triton is often a hard, rigid personality, and while he is truthful, dutiful, and usually honorable, he can be just as arrogant and callous as his father. When he gives an order, he expects it to be obeyed, without question. Similarly, if he is taking an order (and he will only do so from people he considers worth listening to), he will follow it to the letter with military precision, no questions asked. He may not always agree with what he’s told to do, but he only very rarely disobeys his superiors. Though his demeanor is cold and mirthless on the whole, he keeps his temper well in check--though it can have devastating effects if someone succeeds in making him angry. This is not to say he is entirely without mercy or compassion, although he rarely displays them. He doesn’t take any pleasure in seeing people get hurt, but considers it something of an unavoidable consequence when people don’t do as they’re told. Unlike his father, Triton is not generally prone to violence. However, he will confront challenges head-on, even if it means getting his hands dirty in a fight.

His greatest loyalty is to his father, and the proud Triton is constantly striving to win his approval. His next line of loyalty is to his mother, and though he will not generally argue with his father on the matter, Triton has long disapproved of his father’s many affairs, and he disdains his bastard-born half-siblings. He is protective of what he considers his “true” family, and will brook no disrespect toward them.

Women often find themselves attracted to Triton due to his good looks, successful ambition, his innate sense of responsibility, and the suspicion that he has a soft side buried in there somewhere. However, despite only ever dating one woman at a time, he has something of a reputation as a heartbreaker. Although he will entertain women for a while, the relationships never last long. Ultimately, he dismisses each girl in turn as being “unsuitable,” sending them on their way in tears. The girls aren’t wrong--he DOES have a soft side deep down, but usually the only ones capable of drawing it out of him are his mother and sisters.

On the occasions when he has been a parent himself, he is a strict and demanding father who holds his offspring up to the highest standards. Too often, he also withholds his affection and approval, only showing glimpses of warmth when they do something that makes him proud of them. The same typically holds true when he is in charge of any sort of group.

» Other Notes: In addition to English, Triton can also converse in and read French and Italian and has gained a working knowledge of Latin in his three years of college. Occasionally, scraps of Russian will surface in his speech as vestiges from his former life. He is prone to switching languages abruptly when agitated about something.

Triton is straight, approximately a 1 on the Kinsey Scale.

» Sample Journal: My father is coming back on leave next month. Supposedly, he's supposed to stick around until after my birthday. Of course, I still won't see much of him until semester break, but that's just par for the course.

Of course, my mother will gush about all the things I've done since he was home last. Making the dean's list again. Winning the championships for crew and water polo. The new scholarships I've gotten. The only thing that would make her happier would be if I had a girlfriend to show off to boot. Good luck finding one that would impress Dad--I can scarcely find one good enough to impress me.

I don't expect he'll say much about it all one way or another. At least, not to me or my mother. But, if I'm lucky, maybe it'll make him smile for a second or two.

» Sample Log: "You're late." It was not a question. Boden looked from the clock to his teammate, who was panting from the exertion of running to practice.

"So sorry, Murphy. It was an emergency, see, my grandma at the last minute--" the other boy gasped out. Boden's stare remained as unyielding as iron.

"This is not the first time you have been late. Tell me. Is your grandmother part of this team?" Boden asked, his voice calm but steely.

"N-no... But, y'know, she's family and--" the other boy protested.

"You speak of family. This team is your family as long as you are part of it. If you are truly dedicated to the sport, and to our winning the championship, it is your first priority. I ask you to be punctual and to give a full effort toward your commitment here. This is not the first time you've been late," Boden said.

"Well, no, but--"

"The last time we spoke of this matter, I warned you I would tolerate no further disappointments from you. And here I am disappointed again. You're off the team."

"Hey, man, come on! It wasn't my fault! I've got a scholarship and everything riding on this! You can't do this!"

"I can, and I have. You're off the team. Better luck next year." With that, Boden turned around and resumed his warm-up exercises, leaving his former teammate to shuffle off dejectedly, muttering curses under his breath.
